James Thompson
Senior Manager – Investment Risk,

James Thompson is a senior investment risk professional with over 20 years’ experience across asset management, banking and superannuation in Australia and the United Kingdom.
He is currently senior manager within the portfolio risk & solutions function at the Victorian Funds Management Corporation (VFMC), supporting a whole-of-portfolio approach to risk management across public and private markets. In this role, he is responsible for risk measurement, model development and generating portfolio insights that inform investment strategy and portfolio construction.
James has held senior leadership roles spanning investment risk and portfolio analytics, including head of investment analytics & risk at Perpetual, where he led the integration and uplift of risk and analytics capabilities across a multi-boutique investment platform covering over 80 strategies.
His experience spans market, liquidity and counterparty risk, as well as performance and attribution, formed from roles at Janus Henderson, RBC BlueBay and Invesco. He was also a voting member of the Perpetual Private investment committee, overseeing approximately $20bn in assets under advice, and has held roles on management oversight committees, including chairing Trillium Asset Management’s investment performance and risk forum.
He has a strong track record in leading teams and embedding improved operating models, risk systems and reporting frameworks, strengthening risk governance and oversight.
James holds a Bachelor of Business from Swinburne University, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment, and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors course.
