Stephen manages FactSet’s off-platform solutions, which include standard data feeds, cloud environments, on-demand APIs, benchmark data feeds, and other offerings for the Pacific Region. Stephen has worked as a consultant with the largest asset managers in Chicago and the US Midwest, as the first content specialist for FactSet fundamentals & estimates, working in FactSet’s strategic partnerships and alliances team focusing on content redistribution, and his current role as a senior sales specialist.
Since relocating to Sydney three years ago he has been focusing on solving data and technology needs for asset owners, asset managers, and global banks here in Australia and New Zealand. Stephen is a 13-year veteran of FactSet and the financial software industry and holds a B.S. in Finance from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.
Michael Brand is the founder and head of the analytics consultancy firm Otzma Analytics (https://otzmaanalytics.com), providing analytics training, consulting and auditing. Prior to this, he served as chief data scientist for Telstra.
Before that, he headed Monash University's Centre for Data Science (where he is still Adj. A/Prof). He was senior principal data scientist and the data science lead in charge of infrastructure for data science at Pivotal, CTO group algorithm leader at PrimeSense Ltd (in the machine-vision team that developed the XBox Kinect), and chief scientist at Verint Systems, Inc., where he headed the advanced technologies group's speech research team.
Altogether, he has had over 25 years of cutting-edge, international industry experience in a wide diversity of advanced analytics disciplines, in which he developed industry-defining solutions at every scale from on-chip to big data, and from real-time to high-powered computing.
Wietske is a journalist with over fifteen years of experience in financial regulation, risk management, derivatives and technology.
Most recently a regulatory analyst with Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence, Wietske spent six years analysing the impact of financial regulation on market participants across the globe. Prior to this, she was a staff writer at Risk Magazine covering derivatives, risk management and technology across Europe and Asia-Pacific. She started her career as editor of Unquote”, a European private equity publication.
Wietske holds a master’s degree with distinction in global political economy (specialising in global finance) from the University of Sussex, and obtained a first-class bachelor of arts in international relations with French from Université Grenoble Alpes (formerly Université Pierre Mendès France) and the University of Sussex.
Stefano Cavaglia completed a PhD in Finance at the University of Chicago in 1990. Since then he has been applying state of the art theory in the investment management profession. In 1998, under the mentorship of Gary Brinson and Jeff Diermeir, he led the restructuring of UBS Asset Management’s Global Equity investment platform with a view to emphasize the importance of industry factors in the construction of global equity portfolios. His team’s research work supporting the initiative was featured in the Financial Analyst Journal and is now referenced in the CFA curriculum. Subsequently, he founded and managed a $1.3b hedge fund at UBS O’Connor that provided further evidence for his empirical findings.
Since 2009 he has been residing in Australia. His last assignment was as Head of Investment Research at Findex where he managed $16b of high net worth client assets in multi-asset class portfolios. His team developed factor based tools for evaluating managers and for building fund of funds portfolios both long only and long/short mandates. He has recently co-authored a research paper featured in the Journal of Portfolio Management that aims to quantify and measure the importance of downside protection embedded in the factor attributes of portfolios. He is continuing to develop this multi-factor framework for managing risk and meeting client goals in collaboration with Invesco US.
Head of Australian Quantitative Research,
John heads up Macquarie’s highly rated Asia Pacific quantitative strategy team, consulting with global asset managers on investment solutions across their entire investment process. The team deliver investment models, quantitative analysis, risk analysis, and other bespoke services to over 1000 institutional investors.
John joined Macquarie in 2004 and has run the Australian quant team since 2011 and the Asian group since 2018. Under John’s leadership the team were consistently top-ranked by institutional investors. John holds a bachelor of information technology and is a CFA charterholder.

Bev Durston is an award-winning, energetic and seasoned investment professional with over 30 years of global financial services experience. Having managed institutional monies for many years she founded an institutional advisory business, Edgehaven Pty Ltd, in 2013 and expanded this to the UK in 2016.
It is a trusted, bespoke alternatives partner providing handpicked fund recommendations across the broad and constantly evolving landscape of alternative assets for a small number of high quality clients. Using an investor-centred process it sources attractive, niche investments from smaller AUM or emerging managers or strategies. Bev has a first-class banking and international finance degree from CASS in London, a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University, Sydney and professional trustee qualifications. She is an Honorary Fellow of Macquarie University and sits as an independent expert on several institutional Investment Committees.
Investment Manager, Global Equities,
Andy Gardner helped lead the development of AMP Capital's global equity capability, a long term fundamental manager of long only and long short equity strategies. Andy has been a key driver in the company’s shift towards long term investment beliefs, expressed through highly active portfolios designed to meet absolute return and risk objectives.
He has written a variety of white papers on active management and principles of long term investing and wealth creation in companies. He has more than 14 years' investment experience and joined AMP Capital from MF Global where he co-led the build out of their Asia Pacific equity research and principal strategies teams. Earlier in his career Andy spent six years in London focusing on European and US companies. Andy holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics (first class honours) from Kings College London, and is a CFA charter holder.
Head of Market Advocacy and Innovation Research APAC,
Danielle Henderson is a senior vice president and head of market advocacy and innovation research for Asia Pacific, Northern Trust, based in Sydney.
She has over 20 years’ experience within the financial services industry which includes experience across the global securities and market infrastructure sectors delivering post-trade services to large and complex clients in Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa. She has a strong focus on commercial strategy, emerging technology and innovation.
Danielle has held a number of senior roles at the ASX, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and BNP Paribas, where she ran relationship management and service functions in international prime brokerage. She has expertise in regulated market businesses and managing capital and risk.
Danielle holds a Master’s Degree in business administration (MBA) from the University of Melbourne and a bachelor of economics (Honours) degree from the University of Sydney.
Executive Director, Quantitative Equity Strategy,
Berowne has 20+ years of quantitative, machine learning and data analytics experience, working in the J.P. Morgan quantitative and derivatives strategy research team which he joined in 2005. With an initial focus on the Australian equity markets, his research areas have expanded to cover Asia-Pacific and global macro investment strategies. Recently the team has been more formally utilising machine learning techniques, publishing extensively under the ‘big data and AI strategies’ banner. Berowne has typically ranked in the top three for quantitative research in the Peter Lee Surveys in Australia and the team are well placed in the Institutional Investor polls globally.
He regularly engages with industry (Microsoft, Bloomberg, Amazon, ASX, Digital Assets), regulators (ASIC) and academia contacts through a series of quarterly ‘Quantferences’ giving his clients access to the latest academic research and financial markets insights.
Before joining J.P. Morgan, Berowne worked for seven years with MSCI/Barra where he provided risk analysis, training and technical support to clients using Barra's equity and fixed income portfolio construction, risk and performance attribution products. Berowne holds a Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering and a Master’s degree in information science from the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Justin joined Pendal Group in April 2018 and is responsible for the technology, business strategy, strategic projects, operations, product and outsourced relationships functions. Justin possesses over 18 years’ experience in the finance industry, including senior appointments across client service, product, business strategy, operations and project management.
Before joining the company, Justin was a Director at LeapFrog Investments and prior to that, held leadership positions within strategy, operations and strategic projects between 2013 and 2017 at First State Super, one of Australia’s largest pension funds. Justin’s industry experience also incorporates a variety of general management-level roles at Perpetual Investments during his 10-year tenure at the firm.
Justin holds a Bachelor of Science from The Nottingham Trent University and a finance related post graduate qualification from the Securities Institute of Australia (now FINSIA).
Platinum Investment Management
An actuary by training, Douglas first joined Platinum in 2003 as an investment analyst, having spent some time at the Commonwealth Bank as a product actuary and, prior to that, as an investment manager at Aegon Asset Management in Edinburgh.
Douglas left Platinum in 2008 to relocate to Singapore where he helped to develop Standard Chartered Bank’s equity broking business. Having re-joined Platinum in 2013 as an investment specialist, Douglas dedicates himself to serving as a bridge between Platinum’s investment team and the financial advisory community.
Laurence is an institutional investment publishing professional with 19 years' experience. He has published magazines and produced successful institutional investment forums in Australia and throughout Europe, the Middle East and South Africa. This includes having worked closely on the annual Australian Custodial Services Association (ACSA) conference for four years from 2009 to 2012.
Previous roles include head of marketing for BNP Paribas Securities Services Australia and New Zealand, associate publisher of Investment Magazine (formerly Investment & Technology / I&T), senior roles with the Financial Times and other large business-to-business publishers such as Incisive Media and Financial News.
Laurence holds a higher national diploma in business and finance from Southampton Solent University, and prior to studying business qualified in engineering.
Senior Vice President, Global Exchange and Charles River Development
Eric Lapham is the global head of State Street Global Exchange (SSGX) sales and business development. Eric has nearly 30 years of software and services and consulting experience (and 20+ years in financial services, specifically on the buy-side), and joined State Street in early 2017 and lead SSGX to exceed their aggressive global sales targets for the year in both 2017 and 2018. With the successful acquisition of Charles River Development on October 1st, 2018 Eric’s role has extended to include some global sales oversight for CRD as well as still running sales globally for SSGX in 2019.
Prior to State Street, Eric was most recently at BISAM (a market leading middle-office software solution for performance, attribution, and risk) as their global sales leader and was highly responsible for helping the firm quadruple revenue growth over his four year tenure leading to BISAM’s acquisition by Factset in March 2017. Before that Eric held sales leadership positions for nearly 13 years at Charles River Development, a leading front & middle-office (including global trading and portfolio & order management) software solutions provider (CRD was acquired by State Street Corporation in October of 2018).
Eric attended the US Air Force Academy and received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maine, and his MBA in finance and entrepreneurship from FW Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College.
Dr Alistair Rew

Dr Alistair Rew is global head of investech across AMP Capital’s public markets business, and a member of the public markets leadership team. Alistair leads an innovative, team, data and technology-centric strategy focused on partnering and integrating with investment and business teams to deliver superior investment performance to the firm’s clients.
Key elements of the strategy include leveraging data & technology to enhance portfolio & risk management decision making and outcomes through the delivery of integrated analytics, visualisations and insights; along with a robust end-to-end investment operations platform.
Alistair leads a diverse multi-discipline team, bringing together complementary technical and human skills, including data science, technology, software development, research, visualisation, risk and portfolio management, and behavioural finance professionals.
Alistair has over 20 years global experience across the alternative investment management industry. Alistair started his career in London on the trading floors of Kleinwort Benson and Barclays Capital before joining XL Capital Investment Partners in New York, where he was charged with heading up and building a highly regarded global hedge fund program and investment team. Alistair is the chair of AIMA Australia, representing the Australian alternative investment industry, and chair of the AIMA Investor Advisory Group, which aims to bring the experiences and insights of large institutional investors to domestic and global alternative asset managers.
Dr Laura Ryan
Head of Portfolio Construction
Dr Ryan is Head of Portfolio Construction at a soon-to-be-announced asset manager, specialising in portfolio construction and asset allocation for multi-asset portfolios.
Dr Ryan is an internationally-published academic with papers appearing in 'The Journal of Portfolio Management' and 'The Journal of Forecasting', among others. Previously, Dr Ryan was Senior Vice President (Quantitative Research) and a member of the Australian senior management team at PIMCO.
With more than 20 years investment experience, Dr Ryan's other roles include Manager of Quantitative Strategy at Commonwealth Bank, Quantitative Manager at AMP Capital and Lecturer in Statistics at the Australian National University (ANU).
Dr Ryan holds a Ph.D. in statistics from the ANU, a Master of Quantitative Finance from the University of Technology Sydney and an Honours degree in Actuarial Studies from the ANU.

Keli Saville is the Regional Head of Data Management for Asia Pacific with Vanguard Australia.
In this role, Keli is responsible for leading regional Global Investment Data Management for Asia Pacific, ensuring continuous regional client alignment and global data team effectiveness. She provides strategic direction for uplifting data management and governance, ensuring gold copy investment data is available for portfolio management and fund accounting operations.
Prior to joining Vanguard in December 2018, Keli worked at ANZ in various senior data and technology roles that spanned across service management, asset management, project management, risk and compliance.
Keli holds a Master of eBusiness from Monash University and a Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Swinburne University. She is a Committee member of Women Chiefs of Enterprise International (WCEI) Victorian branch, and a Certified Company Director (AICD).

With over 10 year's experience in the financial services vendor industry, Bjorn Schmidt founded Panacea Consulting Services Ltd in 2016 as a specialised information management & systems strategy consultancy focusing on expert advice and system implementations for the financial services industry.
Since founding the business, he has partnered and worked with several local players to consult on optimised analytics workflow and reporting solutions. Prior to his consulting work, Bjorn graduated from Macquarie University with honours and double Masters in International business & relations’ (MIB & MIR) in 2006 and shortly afterwards started his career with FactSet in where he held various roles.

Alan Sheen is the founder, CIO and managing partner of Dalton Street Capital, which was founded in 2015. Immediately prior to establishing Dalton Street, Alan was head of proprietary trading for Credit Suisse Australia managing systematic trading across the Asia Pacific region. Prior to Credit Suisse, Alan has held positions as portfolio manager at AMP Capital Investors and chief investment officer at Challenger Ltd.
Alan has been responsible for managing funds and businesses with up to $16.0 billion in funds under management and teams of more than 40 investment professionals. Alan commenced trading equities, futures and options in 1996. Originally trained in aeronautical engineering, Alan also holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Applied Finance.

Charles River Development
Peter Sherriff is the principal architect for Charles River’s APAC region, based in the firm’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Australia. Peter is responsible for end-to-end Charles River solution design for new clients across the region and for working with the pre-sales team to present this to clients.
Peter joined Charles River in London in 2002, as the support manager for EMEA and APAC to establish the support team and processes for the non-US customer base. In 2004, Peter moved to open the Melbourne office as the client services director, APAC, and built up a team of implementation and support staff across the APAC region.
Peter moved into his current role as principal architect in 2008 where his extensive business, product and client knowledge could be leveraged to assist in new business development.
Prior to joining Charles River, Peter worked for Misys Asset Management Systems in Birmingham, England as an analyst programmer, and later a service delivery manager responsible for leading a team of implementation and support consultants for middle and back office solutions across Europe.
Peter attended the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, where he studied software engineering.

Doug recently finished up with AMP Capital following a successful 18-year career in various executive roles across investment, strategy, transformation and operational disciplines. During this time, he held leadership responsibility for technology, data and operating model programs including custody and administration outsourcing, asset and business mergers and operational efficiency projects.
Most recently he was executive director of AMP Capital Investors Ltd and held leadership responsibility across strategy, operations, data, reporting and analytics, client services, transformation and change management. His recent achievements in this role saw the establishment of AMP Capital’s program office, enterprise data office, process automation capability and investment control team.
Doug is a graduate of the AICD and Macquarie Graduate School of Management having also completed his undergraduate degree in at UTS.
Global Lead Data Scientist, Product Management & Client Experience
RBC Investor & Treasury Services
Based in Sydney, Tomas joined RBC Investor & Treasury Services in early 2019, having previously worked in RBC Wealth Management business in Toronto as a data scientist. For the past three years, Tomas has been applying artificial intelligence (AI) research to solve problems across financial services. He has designed, built, patented, and launched digital products with exponential technologies across the globe. His academic background includes publications in aerospace science and computational fluid dynamics.
Before a career in financial services, his research efforts focused on reducing environmental impact of aviation. He created mathematical models using high performance computing to improve aerodynamics and propulsion of aircrafts. This led to solving flame stability challenges in the next generation of green engines while undertaking PhD research with Nobel Peace Prize winner for climate change, Dr. Sam Sampath, at the University of Toronto.
Tomas is currently establishing the data science practice at RBC Investor & Treasury Services in Australia. As part of the Global Data & Analytics team, Tomas is developing the Advanced Data Experience (ADX) product offering in consultation with the business and clients. He is also exploring opportunities for data and artificial intelligence to disrupt and benefit the asset servicing industry.
Founder and ex-CIO,
Alicia has over 18 years of trading and finance experience across the globe. She co-founded a London based artificial intelligence hedge fund working as its CIO for over five years.
Previously a director in proprietary trading at Merrill Lynch she also held senior roles at Bank of America and RiskMetrics Group. She began her career at Deutsche Bank in Sydney and has a BSc in mathematics and finance and studied for a PhD in mathematics at Imperial College London.
Alicia has a keen interest in applied AI to trading and FinTech more broadly. She is a founding member and co-chairperson of 100 Women in Finance, Sydney branch.
Dr Wang Chun Wei
Quantitative Analyst, RealIndex
Colonial First State Global Asset Management
Wang Chun is a quantitative analyst at RealIndex (Colonial First State Global Asset Management). Before joining CFSGAM, he was a lecturer at UQ Business School with research interests in quantitative finance. Prior to academia, he spent circa three years as a quantitative analyst at Macquarie Investment Management in their global systematic equities team and 3.5 years at a Sydney based hedge fund, Regal Funds Management, as a quantitative analyst with their Pan-Asian systematic long-short portfolios. He has also spent 2 years as a macro strategy and portfolio construction senior investment analyst at AustralianSuper in Melbourne.
Wang Chun holds a BComm(Hons) First Class in Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne, a GradCert in Information Technology at UNSW and a PhD in Finance at the University of Sydney. He is a CFA Charterholder, and currently completing a Master of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
